No Learning NO

By

Some kids learn NO
When they’re tiny and small
But some never learn it,
or hear it at all.

They grow up believing
That NO just means WAIT,
Or MAYBE or LATER
Not something that’s straight.

They think NO means TRY HARDER,
Or PUSH, or JUST TAKE.
They don’t understand
That a real NO won’t break.

And now he’s quite big
With power to wield
But NO just sounds fuzzy,
Like something to steal.

He threatens, he blusters,
He won’t be denied
‘Cause nobody taught him
When NO won’t be defied.

You can’t grab a woman
whenever you want,
You can’t take a country
Like treasures you hunt.

You can’t attack people
living their lives,
Thinking there aren’t consequences?
That wouldn’t be wise.

But he doesn’t know NO,
And NO doesn’t care
Cuz NO is a lesson
he just cannot bear.
